Three nuclear submarines of the Russian Navy currently under maintenance will be recommissioned by 2014, a Navy spokesman told journalists Tuesday: Two Oscar II class (Project 949A Antey) nuclear-powered cruise missile submarines and one Akula class (Project 971 Schuka-B) nuclear-powered attack submarine.

U.S. Navy Lays Keel for Pre-Commissioning Unit John Warner (SSN 785), Virginia class SSN
The U.S. Navy celebrated the keel laying of Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) John Warner (SSN 785) at Huntington Ingalls Industries - Newport News Shipbuilding (HII -NNS) in Newport News, Va., March 16. The submarine is named for former five-term U.S. Senator from Virginia and Secretary of the Navy John Warner.

Russian Navy to Receive 24 Submarines, 54 Warships by 2020
The Russian Navy will receive 24 submarines and 54 warships of various classes by 2020, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Monday. “As a result of the implementation of the state rearmament program to 2020, the navy should receive eight nuclear-powered strategic submarines, 16 multirole submarines and 54 warships of various classes,” Shoigu said at a Defense Ministry meeting .

HMS Ambush attack submarine (SSN) officially welcomed into the Royal Navy
HMS Ambush, the Royal Navy’s most advanced attack submarine was commissioned into the Royal Navy to become “Her Majesty’s Ship” during a ceremony overseen by the submarine’s crew, Naval Base, workers and around 500 invited guests. MS Ambush has officially joined the Royal Navy fleet following a ceremony. The nuclear-powered submarine arrived at her home port of HM Naval Base Clyde in September last year where she has been undergoing sea trials before entering operational service later this year.

UK Ministry of Defence awards BAE Systems contract for Audacious, the 4th SSN in the Astute class
The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded us a contract worth £1.2bn for Audacious, the fourth submarine in the Astute class. The full contract covers the design, build, test and commissioning programme. First steel was cut in 2007 and Audacious is at an advanced stage of construction at BAE Systems’ site in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

Barracuda SSN: DCNS opens combat system shore integration facility
Over 100 people, including DCNS employees and representatives of the DGA, the French Navy and partners, attended a ceremony at the Toulon naval base on Wednesday 28 November to inaugurate the combat system shore integration facility for the Suffren, the first nuclear-powered attack submarine of the new Barracuda type. The combat system is the submarine’s central nervous system. It manages all command and control functions involving all sensors and weapons in real time.

Barracuda next-generation SSNs: DCNS completes first hull ring of SSN Tourville
DCNS’s Cherbourg centre has completed the first pressure hull ring for the third Barracuda-type nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) almost one month ahead of schedule. This is an important milestone for a particularly ambitious DCNS-led programme.
The first ring of Barracuda No. 3 SSN Tourville was completed less than two years after that of Barracuda No. 2, SSN Duguay-Trouin.
